Nebraska offensive coordinator Mark Whipple met with members of the media following day five of fall camp. Whipple spoke on Monday's practice and the importance of having trust in every position.
"I think it is trust in everybody, not just trust in one (position) over the other, "Whipple said. "Donovan (Raiola) has done a good job with those guys. They have been good. We have physical guys. I think really what I have seen is the defense has really taken a notch up on the defensive line. So really competitive battles on the inside runs and outside runs, those things. So, I have all the confidence in the world in those guys."
He spoke on what he is looking for in a starting quarterback.
"Taking care of the football," Whipple said. "I think first games at any level of football are lost more than they are won. So take care of the football. Understand we have a good team, we have a good defense, we have a good kicking game. It does not have to all come on you. We have good running backs. Just a good mix of leadership and making sure the guys are in and out of the huddle, up on the line and understanding the signal. So that part I have been around in the first game they may see something you want to make sure those guys are comfortable. And a lot of the guys, quarterbacks especially, will say 'yeah I feel good about that'. So the honesty factor with me on the play calling comes down to making sure when it comes down to it there is no hesitation on what to do with the ball, where it is going and those things.
Whipple commented on the dynamic of the new coaching staff.
"The guys are really good coaches," he said. "Really good people. Coach Frost did a job. I did not know any of them beforehand. It has been a really good fit. I like guys who have their own style and bring it to the offense. So they brought some ideas and we put some things together. But they are really good people number one. And really do a good job at managing their group or understanding that way.
The Huskers will return to the practice field tomorrow for day six of fall camp. Nebraska kicks off its season on Saturday, Aug. 27 against Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland at 11:30 a.m. (CT) on FOX.
