Arizona men's basketball head coach Tommy Lloyd announced that 6-foot-4 guard Caleb Love has joined the program as a transfer. Love has played the last three seasons at the University of North Carolina and has two years of college eligibility remaining.
"Caleb is a tremendously talented guard who has significant experience playing college basketball at a high level," Lloyd said. "We look forward to helping Caleb grow his game at Arizona. And as we near the completion of the roster for the upcoming season, we feel great about how everything has come together. Now it's time for the real work to start.
Love, a native of St. Louis, Mo., appeared in 101 games over three seasons with the Tar Heels, scoring 1,476 points (14.6 ppg) and making 200 3-pointers while dishing out 338 assists (3.3 apg). He is one of five players in the country to amass those totals in that span. His 200 3-pointers made ranks eighth in UNC history while his point total is 35th all-time in Tar Heel history. Love was named Honorable Mention All-ACC each of the last two seasons after garnering ACC All-Freshman team honors in 2020-21.
He had a streak of 86 consecutive games between the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons with at least one made 3-pointer to set a UNC record. He also had a streak of 40 straight made free throws during the 2021-22 season, the second-longest streak in UNC history.
In his career, Love has averaged 17.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists in seven NCAA Tournament games. He helped lead the Tar Heels to the national championship game in 2022 and earned All-Final Four and All-East Regional accolades. In the six-game run to the title game, Love averaged 18.8 points and made six 3-pointers in two separate games. He finished with 30 points against UCLA in the Sweet Sixteen and then added 28 points against Duke in the national semifinal, with 22 of those coming in the second half against the Blue Devils.
As a junior in 2022-23, Love averaged a career-best 16.7 points per game to rank fifth in the ACC while playing 35.7 minutes per game, the fourth-most in the conference. He led the Tar Heels with 73 made 3-point field goals and was second on the team with 94 assists, recording his third straight season with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio. Love was active on the glass as well, pulling down a career-high 3.7 rebounds.
At Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis, he was the 2020 Gatorade High School Player of the Year in Missouri and was selected for the 2020 McDonald's All-American Game, the Jordan Brand Classic, Iverson Classic and Nike Hoop Summit. In his scholastic career, Love scored over 2,000 points to join former NBA player Larry Hughes as the only players from Christian Brothers College High School to surpass that mark.
