Hilton Magic is alive and well.
The No. 13 Iowa State Cyclones (16-6, 7-3 Big 12) remained unbeaten at home (12-0) by defeating its sixth top-25 opponent in a 68-53 victory over No. 8 Kansas (18-5, 6-4 Big 12) Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
The sold-out crowd watched the Cyclones hold the Jayhawks to 39 percent from the field, well below their season average, and halt a seven-game losing streak to their conference rival.
There were many heroes for the Cyclones, including Jaren Holmes, who scored 15 points after a scoreless first half. Tre King tallied 10 points from off the bench and Tamin Lipsey had an incredible stat line. The rookie from Ames had nine points, eight rebounds and a career-high 10 assists.
The Cyclones were solid on offense, but their defense might have been the story of the game. ISU made it hard for KU to get open looks and forced 20 turnovers while committing only 10. The 53 points allowed was the lowest by a KU team against ISU since 1999.
Jalen Wilson led Kansas with 26 points.
How It Happened
Iowa State raced out to an early lead, moving ahead 13-5 with just under 13 minutes left in the first half. KU cut the Cyclone lead to 20-18 moments later, as Wilson got hot with a couple of treys.
King then scored back-to-back buckets and Lipsey had a hustle play putback to push the lead to eight points (26-18).
The Cyclones closed the half with seven-straight points to mount a 33-21 lead at the break. Gabe Kalscheur made a desperation three with the shot clock winding down and King scored again, his fifth field goal in five attempts, to keep ISU on top.
ISU held KU to just 32 percent shooting in the opening period.
A Holmes trey gave the Cyclones a 13-point advantage early in the second half, but a 8-0 run by KU diminished the ISU lead to 36-31 with under 16 minutes remaining. Holmes helped the Cyclones bounce back with six-straight points, including a shot from long-range, to raise the lead to 42-31.
The Cyclone lead jumped to 18 points (54-36) with 10:08 remaining, as Caleb Grill had five points in a 7-0 run. The Jayhawks never threatened the rest of the way.
Top Performance
Tre King had one of his best performances as a Cyclone, coming off the bench to score 10 points, all in the first half to help the Cyclones out of the gates. King made his first five field goal attempts and was 5-of-7 from the field. Most of King's baskets were on contested baseline jumpers.
