For nearly 30 minutes, the world watched in wonder to see if for just the second time in NCAA Tournament history a No. 16-seed would knock off a No. 1-seed and send March Madness to a whole different level of craziness.

Unfortunately, the run for Georgia State (18-11) came up just short as foul trouble, an injury to senior Eliel Nsoseme, and the overall talent of Gonzaga (27-3) proved to be too much to overcome as the Bulldogs earned a 93-72 win over the Panthers on in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Moda Center.

With 11:27 to play, the nation held its collective breath as Georgia State trailed the top overall seed by just two, 59-57, following a pair of Kaleb Scott free throws.

As multiple players fouled out for the Panthers, Gonzaga used a 24-1 run to take an 83-58 lead with 5:19 to play and cruised the rest of the way to advance to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday where they will play No. 9-seed Memphis.

Senior Corey Allen led the Panthers with 16 points, knocking down four 3-pointers, while fellow senior Kane Williams added 12 points. Junior Jalen Thomas just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Gonzaga got a pair of double-doubles from two of the best players in the country in Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren. Timme finished with 32 points and 13 rebounds, while Holmgren added 19 points and 17 boards.

The Bulldogs size down low proved to be too much as the Zags outscored the Panthers 62-24 in the paint and held a 54-41 advantage on the boards.

Georgia State, which was making its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015 and sixth time overall, showed that they could stand with the top ranked team in the country.

A 3-pointer by freshman Ja'Heim Hudson with 8:15 to play in the first half tied the game 21-21. Less than a minute later, Allen made a pair of free throws to cap a 7-0 GSU run and give the Panthers a 23-21 lead.

Gonzaga went a stretch of missing 12 straight shots and didn't make a field for more than seven minutes, and even when Nsoseme went down with just over six minutes to play in the half, the Panthers did not fold without their emotional leader.

Georgia State went into the locker room trailing by two, 35-33, despite shooting just 28.6 percent from the floor.

A jumper by Evan Johnson with 13:09 to play gave the Panthers a 54-52 lead but that would be the start of a run by Gonzaga that pushed the No. 1-seed on to the next round.

Nsoseme pulled down five rebounds before getting hurt and helped Georgia State outrebound Gonzaga 28-23 in the first half.

As he did most of the season, senior Justin Roberts filled up the scoresheet with 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists. He, along with Nsoseme, Allen, and Williams were a part of one of the most successful senior classes in program history.
