Texas Baseball had two players selected on the final day of the 2022 MLB Draft to bring the Longhorns total to eight draft picks. The eight players selected are the most for the Longhorns since the 2017 season and tied for the fifth-most by any school in this year's draft.
Jared Southard was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 12th round and Skyler Messinger was picked in the 19th round by the Colorado Rockies
Southard, the 358th overall pick by the Angels, made 25 relief appearances in 2022 and compiled a 4-1 record with a 2.76 ERA. He struck out 46 batters in 29.1 innings pitched and held opponents to a .149 batting average against. For his career, Southard finished with a 2.38 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 41.2 innings pitched.
Messinger, selected by the Rockies with the 566th overall pick, batted .364 with 14 doubles, 11 home runs and 59 RBI in his one season for Texas. The Colorado native played 67 games at third base after transferring from Kansas. Messinger finished second on the team with 27 multiple-hit games and 18 multiple-RBI games.
