Baylor’s KC Lightfoot and Texas Tech’s Takieddine Hedeilli shared Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Men’s Athlete of the Week honors, while Red Raider Ruth Usoro was tabbed Women’s Athlete of the Week.
Lightfoot set the indoor collegiate record in the pole vault, clearing 19-5.75 (5.94m) on his first try at the Corky Classic in Lubbock to break the record of 5.93 set a year ago. The junior from Lee's Summit, Mo., raised his own school record by 4.25 inches and now has the top nine marks on Baylor's all-time indoor performances list. Lightfoot’s mark is currently No. 1 in the Big 12, NCAA, and the world.
Hedeilli opened his season with a time of 1:45.98 in the 800m at the Corky Classic, which placed him firmly atop the NCAA and world rankings – the latter of which he has a three-second lead. Hedeilli’s 800m counted as the 10th-best performance in the history of the NCAA, while at the same time breaking the indoor national record for his home country of Algeria by over a second.
Usoro’s triple and long jump total distance of 68'-2.5" (20.79m) at the Corky Classic goes down as one of the best in NCAA history. Her world-leading triple mark – set on her very first jump of the season – broke the Nigerian record and counted as the second-best mark in NCAA history. The triple jump broke a facility and school record – both previously owned by Usoro herself.
This is the fifth weekly career accolade for Lightfoot, tying him for the Big 12 record in all-time selections. Hedeilli and Usoro are first-time honorees.
Lightfoot and Usoro were also tabbed the USTFCCCA National Athletes of the Week.
