Charlotte is proud to announce the addition of incoming St. John's transfer Riyon Tori to its men's soccer team for the upcoming 23-24 season.
"We are excited to welcome Riyon to Charlotte," said 49ers' head coach Kevin Langan. "He is a very technical playmaking midfielder who is excellent in possession. He is very sharp in one-v-one duels with and without the ball. His high speed of play will be a great fit for the Charlotte style of play."
From Osaka, Japan, Tori is ready to showcase his talent with the 49ers. Tori was named captain of his U18 club team, Cerezo Osaka and played for the U23 team in the J. League in Japan. Tori was a member of the Nike Next Hero project, and was recognized as one of the top 20 U18 players in Japan. During his time at St. John's, he started in the first and second rounds of the 2021 NCAA Tournament where he played whole minutes as a freshman.
Tori has been playing soccer for 16 years. His favorite team is Real Madrid and his favorite player Jose Gutiérrez Hernández better known as Guti.
"The coaching staff at Charlotte is great and we can compete for a championship here." Tori said. "I can bring determination, experience, and professionalism to the team."
The Niners complete roster will open the 2023 campaign on Thursday, Aug. 24 at Charlotte against UConn for the Niners 12th season under head man Kevin Langan.
