Thanks to a pair of goals on each side of the halftime break, NC State men's soccer (4-4-1) picked up a midweek win over visiting High Point (4-3-3) with a 2-0 decision over the Panthers on Tuesday night.
Will Buete (42') and Calem Tommy (52') were the two goal scorers for the Wolfpack as NC State handed High Point its first loss since Sept. 6. The Pack has beat the Panthers in back-to-back seasons and increased its lead in the all-time series between the squads to 12-4-1.
NC State generated a couple of quality shots in the first half before Buete tallied the first goal of his Wolfpack career from the penalty stripe. Junior Nare was taken down inside the box to generate the attempt, and Buete converted with a low ball to the bottom right corner.
The Pack's second-half goal came with its fair share of dramatics as well with Tommy in the right place to finish on a scrum in front of the net. The goal ultimately came off a free kick from nearly midfield that Kendall Edwards settled four yards out to keep the play alive. Pablo Pedregosa got the initial shot off, one that went off the right post, but Tommy put it away on the rebound for his second score of the season.
Making his seventh appearance of the season, goalkeeper Lucas Hatsios made three saves for his third clean sheet and the team's fourth shutout of the year. NC State's formidable back line played a huge role in keeping the Panthers off the board. That included a stop on the goal line by senior defender Kendall Edwards, who prevented a Panther goal in the 50th minute just shortly before the Pack's second score of the night.
The Wolfpack hits the road for the first time in three weeks as it travels to Boston College on Friday, Oct. 7. The conference clash is set to kick off at 7 p.m. from Chestnut Hill, Mass., and will be broadcast live on ACCNX.
