Former Boston University men's ice hockey standouts Ryan Greene and Quinn Hutson made their National Hockey League debuts this week, as Hutson skated for the Edmonton Oilers and Greene played for the Chicago Blackhawks.
Greene and Hutson, who helped BU advance to the Frozen Four in each of their three seasons on Comm. Ave, were the 97th and 98th Terriers, respectively, to skate in the NHL. Greene was first to take his rookie lap, helping the Blackhawks earn a 4-3 shootout win in Montreal. Hutson was next, debuting in Edmonton as the Oilers faced off with the Los Angeles Kings.
A second-round draft pick of the Blackhawks in 2022, Greene signed a totaled 34 goals and 71 assists for 105 points in 118 career games. He enjoyed his most productive season as a junior co-captain, setting career highs in goals (13), assists (25) and points (38) and earning Hockey East Third Team All-Star accolades. Greene missed just two games in his collegiate career, both while he was at Canada's World Junior camp in 2022. He was particularly productive at the end of the season, totaling five points in four NCAA Tournament games as he helped lead BU to the national title game. Greene is scheduled to graduate in May with a degree from the College of Communication.
Hutson signed with Edmonton as an undrafted free agent after an outstanding junior season. He led the Terriers with a career-high 50 points thanks to career bests in goals (23) and assists (27). He finished tied for fourth in the NCAA with 1.32 points per game en route to being named a Hockey East Second Team All-Star and a New England Division I All-Star. His final goal of the year was his most important, as he scored in overtime of the NCAA Toledo Regional final to send BU back to the Frozen Four. Hutson was the fastest player to score 20+ goals and 25+ assists this season and became the 50th Terrier in program history to score 50 goals and record 50 assists, finishing his time at BU with 56 goals and 58 assists for 114 points in 117 career games.
