CHARLESTON, W.Va. — It was a wild week in the Big 12 and the latest edition of our Snapshot reflects that. For the first time this season, we have teams shuffling slots in all three of our fantasy sports-style tier format, indicative of the kind of wild week it was in conference play.Among the big picture questions right now; will Baylor lose a game before the conference tournament begins? Can WVU successfully navigate arguably the most brutal stretch of games against ranked teams in school history? How will Kansas respond to not being ranked in the Top 25 for the first time in a dozen years this week? Is Texas a Top 5 team or just the fifth best team in the Big 12?Here’s our latest Snapshot, which features a tier format, rather than traditional standings or more conventional power rankings.
TIER ONE; (potential top four NCAA Tournament seeds)BAYLOR BEARSThe Bears are paused for the moment, due to COVID, and their game at Oklahoma on Wednesday has been postponed. BU is set to return to action next Saturday against Texas Tech. While they haven’t clinched the regular season title yet, the Bears now lead the Big 12 by three games in the standings and are rated No. 1 nationally on KenPom.com .
OKLAHOMA SOONERSWith the Sooners’ scheduled date with Baylor on Wednesday postponed due to COVID, Oklahoma has some extra time to focus on next Saturday’s game in Morgantown. OU bounced back from their road loss at Texas Tech with a 79-72 victory over Iowa State on Saturday. Austin Reaves was back after a two-game hiatus and scored 16 points. Brady Manek rejoined the Sooners’ starting lineup and pulled down 15 rebounds to go along with nine points. Getting to the line was a key in OU’s seven-point victory; Oklahoma shot 21 free throws, while Iowa State attempted only two.
WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINEERSThe Mountaineers’ tests against ranked teams continues this week with a trip to Texas Tech on Tuesday before hosting Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon. WVU rebounded from a potentially catastrophic late second half collapse at Iowa State to dominate slumping Kansas, 91-79. Miles McBride led the way with 29 points, Taz Sherman added a career-high 25 points, as the Mountaineers forced KU into 18 turnovers in a game in which WVU never trailed.
TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERSTTU comes into their Tuesday home date with WVU with some momentum. After being paused for a week due to COVID, Texas Tech upset Oklahoma, then followed that up with a workman-like effort in a win over Kansas State on Saturday, 73-62. After failing to score a field goal in the victory over Oklahoma, Georgetown transfer Mac McClung poured in 23 points to lead all scorers at K-State. After hosting WVU on Tuesday, TTU heads for Baylor next Saturday.
TIER TWO; (post-season tournament (NCAA and NIT) contenders)
OKLAHOMA STATEOklahoma State is putting some things together, just at the right time. OSU has won five of their last seven games, including a double-OT thriller of a victory over Texas in Stillwater. The key to the upset of Texas was the Cowboys’ defense, as UT was just 20-for-79 (25%) from the field. Cade Cunningham had 19 points against the Longhorns, but struggled to finish around the rim, going just 5-for-22 from the field. OSU didn’t have starter Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe for the Texas game after a foot injury in practice on Friday and his status for the Cowboys’ game at Kansas on Monday is unknown.
TEXAS LONGHORNSAfter three straight losses, suddenly Texas has gone from a team solidly in the Top 10 in the rankings to the middle of the pack in the Big 12 standings. There were some positives in their double-OT loss at Oklahoma State; UT forced 22 turnovers and grabbed 22 offensive rebounds. But Texas allowed OSU to get to overtime despite having the ball and the lead with less than a minute to play in regulation. UT has a great chance to get back on track this week with a Tuesday date at K-State before coming home to host TCU next Saturday.
KANSAS JAYHAWKSThere are not a lot of positives here for KU’s flagship athletic program. Kansas has dropped five of its last seven games, including a 91-79 loss at WVU on Saturday that’s likely to snap the Jayhawks’ streak of 231 consecutive weeks in the AP Top 25, dating back to 2009. Bill Self is now just 3-6 against WVU in Morgantown. After trailing by ten at halftime, the Jayhawks managed to rally to tie the Mountaineers briefly in the second half, but were dominated down the stretch. Marcus Garrett led KU with 18 points, while Jalen Wilson added 16 points and 14 rebounds. KU has three games this week; hosting Oklahoma State on Monday, followed by a home date with Iowa State on Thursday and a trip to Ames on Saturday.
TCU HORNED FROGSWe noted in our Snapshot last week, that despite the mounting losses, TCU was improving. TCU had the weekend off after their game at Baylor was postponed due to COVID with the Bears. In their most recent game, TCU stunned Oklahoma State, 81-78, to snap a five-game slide and sweep the regular season series with OSU in a wild affair that featured eleven lead changes. TCU has a good chance to bank another win with a Tuesday home date with Iowa State, the first of two remaining games with the Cyclones.
TIER THREE: (cellar dwellers)
IOWA STATE CYCLONESWe are going to move Iowa State out of our Snapshot basement this week, after a pair of solid efforts in losses to nationally ranked WVU and Oklahoma. In the home loss to the Mountaineers last week, ISU rallied from 15 points down with six minutes left to make it a one-possession game late before WVU made their free throws to earn the win. At Oklahoma against the Sooners on Saturday, Iowa State was finding the range all afternoon from beyond the arc, knocking in 16-of-31 attempts. Rasir Bolton led ISU with 21 points and seven rebounds. Iowa State has a busy week; at TCU on Tuesday, at Kansas on Thursday and will host KU next Saturday.
KANSAS STATE WILDCATSK-State’s painful, circling-of-the-drain kind of a season continued last week with a pair of lopsided losses to arch-rival Kansas and most recently to Texas Tech on Saturday. Kansas State’s losing streak has now reached double digits at ten and K-State will likely be double digit underdogs in the majority of their six remaining regular season games. In an effort to find something positive, KSU’s performance, especially at the defensive end, in their home loss to TTU was their best in over a month. Kansas State actually won the battle on the boards, 32-28, but 18 turnovers was the difference in the 73-62 loss to Texas Tech. K-State will host Texas on Tuesday night.
