Texas Tech Head Coach Grant McCasland Tabbed To A Team USA Basketball Position was created by C. Austin Cox
Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland has been selected to join the 2024 USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team coaching staff. USA Basketball announced on Friday the 2024 USA Men's U18 National Team will be led by Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd who will be assisted by McCasland and Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry.
"Being a part of USA Basketball is something you dream about growing up," McCasland said. "To represent our country coaching basketball is humbling and a great honor."
Coaching staff selections for the USA Men's U18 National Team were made by the USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee. All selections were approved by the USA Basketball Board of Directors.
Lloyd, McCasland and Shrewsberry will lead the Americans at the 2024 FIBA U18 Men's AmeriCup. The date and location of the tournament will be announced by FIBA at a later date.
McCasland is in his first season at Texas Tech where he has led the No. 15-ranked Red Raiders to a 16-4 record through 20 games and to a 5-2 Big 12 mark. Previously, while the head coach at UNT, he led the Mean Green to three Conference USA titles (2020, 2021, 2022), their first NCAA Tournament victory and two postseason tournament championships (2018 CBI, 2023 NIT). He enters his first USA Basketball coaching assignment after serving as a court coach for the 2021 U19 National Team.
"The opportunity to work with Tommy Lloyd and Micah Shrewsberry is a real honor," McCasland said. "They are both amazing basketball minds and also great leaders and people."
Lloyd took the reins at Arizona in 2021 and has led the Wildcats to record-breaking success. His 61 victories during his first two seasons set the NCAA record. In his first season with Arizona in 2022, Lloyd was named National Coach of the Year by NABC, USBWA and Associated Press. Lloyd was previously an assistant at Gonzaga University for 22 seasons. He will be serving his first USA Basketball head coaching assignment as he was a court coach for the 2022 USA Men's U18 National Team. He has previously served USA Basketball as a committee member.
"I can't imagine getting to work with better coaches than Tommy Lloyd and Micah Shrewsberry," McCasland said. "Both are amazing basketball minds and great leaders that genuinely care about people."
Shrewsberry is in his first season at Notre Dame after an accomplished career spanning the NBA and college ranks. Shrewsberry's coaching resume includes being the head coach at Pennsylvania State University (2021-23) and Indiana University South Bend (2005-07); and an assistant coach at Purdue (2019-21, 2011-13), Boston Celtics (2013-19), Butler University (2008-11), DePauw University (2001-03) and Wabash College (1999-00). He will also make his USA Basketball coaching debut but was previously a court coach for the 2023 U19 National Team.
