Brock Purdy and Breece Hall added to their legacies by doing what they do best and Iowa State earned a 59-7 victory over Kansas on Saturday night at Mid-American Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium.

Purdy threw four touchdown passes, all in the first quarter, and became just the sixth player in Big 12 history to pass for 10,000 yards and rush for 1,000. Hall scored twice on short runs to extend his Big 12 record to 17-straight games with a rushing touchdown and now has sole possession of the school record for career rushing touchdowns with 38, breaking a tie with Troy Davis.

Both ISU stars left the game for good after Hall's 1-yard touchdown run gave the Cyclones (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) a 45-7 lead with 5:27 left in the third quarter. Hall also scored on a 9-yard burst in the second quarter and finished with 123 yards in 17 carries as Iowa State beat the Jayhawks (1-4, 0-2) for the seventh-straight time.

It was coach Matt Campbell's 27th conference victory, tying him with Dan McCarney for the most in school history. The 59 points were the most ever against Kansas and the Cyclones' highest point total in a Big 12 game since a 66-10 victory over Texas Tech on Nov. 19, 2016.

Purdy completed all five of his passes in the first quarter, four of them going for touchdowns, and wound up 17-for-22 for 245 yards with no interceptions. His TD passes -- a school record for one quarter -- went to four different receivers: 36 yards to Xavier Hutchinson; 6 yards to Charlie Kolar, who made a leaping grab before keeping a toe down in the far right corner of the end zone; 44 yards to Joe Scates, who was 10 yards behind the defense, and a 7-yard swing pass to backup running back Jirehl Brock.

Purdy added 37 yards rushing in five carries and now has career totals of 10,115 yards passing and 1,079 yards rushing.

His replacement, Hunter Dekkers, sped 41 yards for a touchdown on a keeper and Deon Silas capped the rout with a 16-yard TD run in the closing minutes.

Iowa State, which piled up a season-high 564 total yards, led 38-0 before the Jayhawks' Torry Locklin scored on a 12-yard run.

The Cyclones thwarted two earlier Kansas threats with big defensive plays.

Eyioma Uwazunike blocked Jacob Borcila's field goal attempt and Greg Eisworth returned the ball 55 yards to the Kansas 32. Purdy hit Brock four plays later for a 28-0 lead.

The Jayhawks drove to the Iowa State 10 midway through the second quarter before Kym-Mani intercepted Jason Bean in the end zone. The pick set up an 80-yard drive that ended when Hall charged through a big hole in the left side from 9 yards out.

Cyclones of Note

  • Purdy threw to Hutchinson seven times and the senior wideout caught all seven balls for 96 yards.
  • Tight end Charlie Kolar had four key catches for 64 yards.
  • Dekkers and Silas each scored the second touchdowns of their career. Their contributions helped the Cyclones pile up 290 yards rushing, the most since that Texas Tech game in 2015.
  • Kickoff specialist Andrew Mevis got a workout. Mevis kicked off eight times and sent all eight into the end zone for touchbacks, preventing any returns.
  • Freshman safety Beau Freyler led the defense eight tackles and added a quarterback hurry.
  • With the clock about to expire at the end of the first half and the Cyclones with no timeouts, the field goal unit hurried on the field and got the ball snapped in time for Connor Assalley to kick a 26-yard field goal to make it 38-0.

Up Next

The Cyclones are idle next Saturday and will return to action Saturday, Oct. 16 at Kansas State, kickoff time and television network to be determined.
