Redshirt sophomore kicker Charlie Ham was recognized as a 'Star of the Week' by the Palm Beach Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicker Award.
Ham, a native of Atlanta, Ga., matched his career high of 12 points to help the Blue Devils top Northwestern, 30-23, on Saturday. He connected on three of his four field goal attempts in the game, tying his previous career high of three field goals at Syracuse last season. His 50-yard field goal against the Wildcats was a career long. He also connected on 23- and 27-yard attempts.
In 16 career games, Ham has made 17-of-20 field goals and 43-of-45 on PATs. He also has 94 career points to his ledger. This season, he is second among the Blue Devils with 25 points.
The Lou Groza Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
