When it comes to college football programs benefiting from quarterbacks transferring in, the Oklahoma Sooners and SMU Mustangs certainly come to mind for fans of the sport.
Southern Methodist has seen the talents of Garrett Gilbert and Shane Buechele come into Dallas from the University of Texas to breathe a second life into their college careers and the Mustangs' program.
Meanwhile, the Sooners have made several trips to the College Football Playoff courtesy of quarterback transfers Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Jalen Hurts - three stars that landed in Norman after beginning their collegiate careers at Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and Alabama respectively.
Now the two programs are directly linked as former Oklahoma quarterback Tanner Mordecai has announced that he is transferring to SMU to play for the Ponies. The former Sooner spent two seasons at Oklahoma as a backup, first to Hurts in 2019, and then to Spencer Rattler in 2020.
Mordecai, a former ESPN 300 recruit from the 2018 class, made appearances in 12 games during the his career in Norman. The signal-caller completed 50 of his 70 pass attempts for a total 639 yards and four touchdowns.
Two-year starter Shane Buechele has declared for the 2021 NFL draft, meaning the Mustangs will have an open competition for the starting job next season. Competing against Mordecai for that spot will be Preston Stone, a 2021 ESPN 300 quarterback from the Dallas area that Sonny Dykes inked during early signing period.
