COLUMBUS, Ohio (BCSNN) — Beau Atkinson, a standout defensive end from North Carolina, has announced his transfer to Ohio State, bolstering the Buckeyes' defensive line ahead of the 2025 season. Atkinson, a 6-foot-6, 265-pound edge rusher, made his decision public Tuesday night after visiting the Ohio State campus earlier this week.
Atkinson, a former four-star recruit from Raleigh, North Carolina, emerged as one of the Atlantic Coast Conference's top pass rushers during his time with the Tar Heels. Over the past two seasons, he recorded 54 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and one forced fumble. His breakout 2024 campaign included 7.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss, earning him recognition as one of the ACC's premier defensive players.
Ohio State faced significant turnover on its defensive line this offseason, making Atkinson's arrival a timely addition. He is expected to compete for a starting role alongside returning players and fellow transfers.
Atkinson's transfer process attracted interest from several top programs, including Georgia and South Carolina, but Ohio State ultimately secured his commitment. The Buckeyes' defensive line coach, Larry Johnson, played a pivotal role in recruiting Atkinson, emphasizing the program's culture and development opportunities.
With two years of eligibility remaining, Atkinson joins a restructured Ohio State defense aiming to defend its national title. His presence adds experience and proven production to a unit undergoing significant changes, positioning him as a key contributor for the upcoming season.
