UNLV head football coach Dan Mullen announced that he has completed his lineup of on-field assistants with the announcement of former NFL player and Mountain West standout Quinton Ganther as the Rebels' new running backs coach.
Ganther comes to Las Vegas after serving in the same position at Utah for the last three years (2022-24). He coached the Utes' rushing offense to top-three rankings in the Pac-12 in his first season with 217.6 yards per game (second) in 2022, which also sat at No. 11 in the FBS, and in 2023 (third) with 182.5 YPG.
As a team, the Utes surpassed 2,000 yards on the ground in back-to-back seasons under Ganther with 3,047 yards in 2022 – the second-highest rushing total and YPG in program history – and 2,373 yards in 2023. In that span, Utah rushed for over 200 yards in 13 games, including 300-plus yards four times, as well as a school-record 38 rushing TDs in 2022.
Ganther led a running back room that had four different players reach the 100-yard mark in a game across in a three-year period and in 2022 saw three different running backs each rush for over 500 yards in Tavion Thomas (687 yards), Micah Bernard (533 yards) and Ja'Quinden Jackson (531 yards). In 2024, Bernard finished with a career-high 1,009 yards after turning in four 100-yard outings.
Before returning to Salt Lake City, Ganther made his start as RB coach at Weber State from 2013-20. In this role, he guided Josh Davis to back-to-back All-American seasons (2018-19) and 2018 National Freshman of the Year honors along with fullback Clay Moss to an All-Big Sky First Team selection (2019). During his time in Ogden, the Wildcats won three consecutive Big Sky titles, made four straight trips to the FCS playoffs with a semifinals appearance in 2019, and a top-10 national ranking in his final three seasons.
In between his stints at Utah and Weber State, Ganther gained coaching experience in the NFL as the Jacksonville Jaguars' offensive quality control coach in 2021 and in 2013 with the Seattle Seahawks after earning the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship. A former seventh round pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2006, he spent six years in the league, appearing in 36 games with Washington, Seattle and Buffalo in addition to the Titans.
The two-time All-Mountain West running back played two seasons (2004-05) at Utah where he later began his coaching career as a student assistant in 2012 while completing his bachelor's degree in sociology. In 2004 for the Utes, he rushed for 654 yards and was a part of the Utah team that finished 12-0 and won the Fiesta Bowl. As a senior in 2005, he rushed for 1,120 yards and seven touchdowns.
He transferred to the Ute program from Citrus College as a JUCO All-American who set the program's single-season and career record for both rushing yards and all-purpose yards.
