Texas Tech junior quarterback Behren Morton will miss the AutoZone Liberty Bowl after undergoing elective shoulder surgery in Los Angeles earlier this week.
Morton, who has played with a joint sprain in his right shoulder for most of the season, decided to have the surgery now, in an effort to ensure full rehabilitation this spring, so he can be ready for summer workouts. The surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, a leading orthopedic surgeon who specializes in shoulder injuries.
Morton, who ranks 10th nationally with 3,335 passing yards and 27 touchdowns, will be replaced by true freshman Will Hammond in his first career start. Hammond has played in three games this season, throwing for 191 yards and a touchdown. Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire expressed confidence in Hammond's abilities and noted that Morton will be a valuable resource for the team leading up to the game.
Morton's decision to undergo surgery now was influenced by advice from several leading NFL medical experts and his family. He stated that the injury did not impact his performance this past season but elected to have the surgery for his long-term success. Morton is projected to resume throwing activities this spring and return to full workouts in the summer.
Despite Morton's absence, Texas Tech remains optimistic about their chances in the Liberty Bowl against Arkansas. The Red Raiders, who are fifth in the country in scoring at 38.6 points per game, will rely on Hammond and the rest of the team to continue their strong performance. Morton's leadership and support will be crucial as the team prepares for the game.
