Houston Football has accepted an invitation to play in the 2020 New Mexico Bowl and will take on Hawai'i, it was announced on Sunday.
The game will take place on Dec. 24 at 2:30 p.m. CT inside Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, and air on ESPN and ESPN Radio.
"We are excited to host the Houston Cougars and Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors both making their first appearance in our game," said New Mexico Bowl Executive Director Jeff Siembieda. "This should be a really exciting and fun matchup for the New Mexico Bowl and we are looking forward to hosting these two tremendous programs and their fans in Frisco."
Originally scheduled to take place in Albuquerque, N.M., the New Mexico Bowl was re-located to Frisco in November due to state health guidelines regarding intercollegiate athletics and travel by the state of New Mexico.
This will mark Houston's seventh bowl appearance in the last eight years and the first under head coach Dana Holgorsen. The Cougars will be making their 28th bowl appearance overall, while UH holds an all-time bowl record of 11-15-1.
The contest will mark the second bowl game matchup between Houston and Hawai'i. The Rainbow Warriors knocked off the Cougars, 54-48, in a triple-overtime thriller in the 2003 Hawai'i Bowl.
It will be Houston's first appearance in the New Mexico Bowl. The Cougars will also be the first team from the American Athletic Conference to appear in the New Mexico Bowl.
