Syracuse dropped a 38-10 decision on a Thursday night at Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium.
Defensively, Marlowe Wax Jr. led the way with 14 tackles, the most by a Syracuse player this season and a new career best. Wax added two sacks to his evening as well. Isaiah Johnson notched a pair of pass breakups as Wax and Leon Lowery picked up two tackles for loss.
Syracuse (4-4) had 138 passing yards from Garrett Shrader, connecting with tight end Dan Villari for the lone Orange touchdown. Damien Alford snagged four catches for a team-best 70 yards in the air.
Virginia Tech (4-4) had 528 total yards of offense, including 318 on the ground. The Hokies picked up points on their first six possessions of the game with three touchdowns and three field goals.
The Orange broke through on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter, trimming the Hokie lead to 23-3. Virginia Tech scored once more before halftime for a 30-3 lead.
After surrendering a safety, Syracuse scored its touchdown midway through the third quarter as Shrader and Villari connected on a 6-yard pass play, covering 80 yards on nine plays while using nearly three and a half minutes off the clock.
Virginia Tech was limited to a pair of field goals following the Syracuse touchdown, both from inside 35 yards.
After spending the last month on the road, Syracuse returns home to the JMA Wireless Dome on Friday, Nov. 3 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against Boston College on ESPN2.
