North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton rushed for a career-high 234 yards on 26 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Tar Heels held off an upset bid from in-state foe App State, 40-34 in double overtime.
The performance earned him the Doak Walker National Running Back of the Week honor for games of the weekend of Sept. 9.
The 6-0, 220-pound sophomore from Clayton, N.C. opened the scoring for North Carolina with a career-long 68-yard touchdown run before adding a 7-yard fourth-quarter scoring dash and tacking on a 17-yard scoring run on Carolina’s first possesion of overtime. The Atlantic Coast Conference’s Running Back of the Week became the 27th UNC player to rush for more than 200 yards in a game.
Coming off a two-touchdown performance in the season-opener against South Carolina, Hampton is the first Tar Heel to score five rushing touchdowns in the first two games of a season since 1995.
The Tar Heels (2-0) play host to Minnesota on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
