Duke head coach Mike Elko has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week, presented by PNC Bank, the organization announced.
The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
Elko's Blue Devils earned a 28-7 victory over No. 9 Clemson on Monday night at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium. He led Duke to the program's first win over an AP top-10 team since 1989 and snapped Clemson's 12-game winning streak in ACC play. Junior Riley Leonard threw for 175 yards, while adding eight carries for 98 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, the team forced three turnovers and held Clemson scoreless in the second half. Monday's 21-point win was Duke's largest over a ranked opponent since beating No. 9 Colgate 34-0 in 1942.
"Coach Elko is already leaving his mark at Duke with everything he's been able to accomplish in such a short period of time" said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. "He's put the Duke football program on the map, while also continuing a tradition of academic excellence, which is something Coach Dodd would have certainly applauded."
Elko is now in his second season as head coach at Duke, posting a 10-4 record overall. Named the 2022 ACC Coach of the Year, Elko become the first head coach in program history to lead his team to nine wins and a bowl victory in the first season at the helm. He also guided the Blue Devils to a 5-3 mark in conference play his first year, to match the best one-year improvement by a winless team in league history.
Off the football field, Elko's players have had continuous success in the classroom during his tenure, recording a 983 Academic Progress Rate and a 95 Graduation Success Rate during the 2022 season.
"What coach Elko has already achieved at Duke has been nothing short of impressive, both on and off the field," said Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and president. "He has put his student-athletes in a position to be great players on the field and great men following their football careers as well."
The Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership, and integrity.
A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2023 season. The winner of the 2023 Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank will be announced in Atlanta during the week of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
