Texas Tech has had some Red Raiders sign undrafted free agent agreements thus far as place kicker Trey Wolff will head to the Tennessee Titans, while Marquis Waters will join the New York Jets and SaRodorick Thompson Jr. will go to the New Orleans Saints.
The list of free agent agreements add to a memorable NFL Draft weekend where Tyree Wilson was selected seventh overall by the Las Vegas Raiders. Wilson, who was introduced to the Raiders faithful Friday, became the highest-drafted Red Raider defensive player all-time Thursday and the fifth to go in the top-10 picks.
For Wolff, his signing is a great reward after a memorable super senior season where he consistently delivered in key moments, connecting on game-winning kicks in overtime to top both Texas and Oklahoma. He was 21-of-25 on field goal attempts to push the Red Raiders to an appearance in his hometown of Houston for the TaxAct Texas Bowl, becoming the first Red Raider in program history to have 20 or more successful field goals over multiple seasons in the process.
Wolff was 42-of-52 on field goal tries over his career as one of the most-accurate kickers in program history. He ended his Texas Tech tenure ranked fifth all-time in program history for both successful field goals (42) and PATs (107) as well as ninth on the career scoring chart with 233 points, ranking fourth among kickers on that list.
Thompson also placed his name in the school record book during his final season as he closed his career with 2,664 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns. He ultimately ranked third all-time for career rushing touchdowns, fourth in career total touchdowns (41), seventh in carer rushing attempts (540) and eighth for career rushing yards.
Thompson rushed for at least 500 yards in each of the past four seasons, closing his career with 684 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground as part of a dynamic 1-2 approach alongside Tahj Brooks. Thompson led the Red Raiders in rushing as both a redshirt freshman in 2019 and sophomore in 2020 and came close to adding a third rushing crown this past season before finishing seven yards back of Brooks with eight less carries.
Waters, meanwhile, put together his best season as a Red Raider this past season to close his collegiate career as he returned from an injury that forced him to redshirt in 2021 and ultimately ranked second among defensive backs for tackles for loss. Waters excelled at the "star" position in defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter's scheme, totaling 60 tackles overall, including an impressive 13.0 for a loss.
Additional free agent signings will be announced via @TexasTechFB on Twitter as they are confirmed.
