Minnesota football held its spring game Saturday morning with the Gold squad prevailing over Maroon in an overtime thriller, 36-34. Zach Evans ran in a two-yard score to deliver the victory.
The game was tied 34-34 with time winding down. Head coach P.J. Fleck then instructed the Maroon team to go for a two-point conversion, which failed. The Gold team then had the chance to go for two points and Evans hurtled his way into the paint for the winning score.
Tyler Nubin, Le'Meke Brockington and Evans were all named Sid Hartman Spring Game MVPs.
The Gold team struck first from an unlikely presence as Nubin, who is projected to be one the top defensive backs in the nation in 2023, lined up on the offensive side of the ball. Streaking down the sidelines, he was hit in stride by Cole Kramer for a 53-yard touchdown.
The lead then grew to 14-0 as Evans plunged his way into the end zone from two yards out. The play was set up by a deep bomb from Kramer to Brockington.
Maroon made it a one-score game in the second quarter as Jordan Nubin, the younger brother of Tyler, got in on the action with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Evans wasn't done though as he broke off a scintillating 75-yard score that showcased not only his elusiveness but his breakaway speed, as well.
Just before halftime, Athan Kaliakmanis scored on a quarterback keeper from eight yards out to cut the deficit to 21-14 for Maroon.
Scoring in the third quarter belonged to kicker Dragan Kesich as he converted on a 31-yard field goal for Maroon and a 39-yarder for Gold.
Trailing 24-17 going into the fourth quarter, Maroon tied it up early in the frame as Kaliakmanis found Elijah Spencer in the back of the end zone on a 21-yard fade.
With just over under five minutes remaining, Darius Taylor barrelled in from a yard out to put Maroon ahead 31-24, but on the very next play Kramer found Brockington for a 69-yard score that knotted the game back up.
Kesich made a pair of pressure field goals late in the fourth quarter, first for Gold from 48 yards out with under 40 seconds to go, and then a 46-yarder for Maroon that evened the game up at 34-34 with 10 seconds left.
Minnesota opens the 2023 season at home against Nebraska on Thursday, Aug. 31.
