Kansas running back Devin Neal and Temple running back Edward Saydee each gained 334 all-purpose yards in conference wins over Oklahoma State and South Florida.
Those performances earned them a share of the Doak Walker National Running Back of the Week honor for games of the weekend of Nov. 5.
Neal, a 5-11, 210-pound sophomore from Lawrence, Kan., carried 32 times for 224 yards and added 110 yards on six receptions in Kansas’ 37-16 home win over Oklahoma State. Neal became the first Jayhawk with at least 200 yards rushing and over 100 yards receiving in a game. His 334 yards of total offense is the second-highest one-game total this season.
It was Neal’s fifth 100-yard rushing game and the most rushing yards by a Jayhawk since Pooka Williams had 252 vs. Oklahoma in 2018. Kansas is now bowl eligible for the first time since 2008.
Saydee, a 5-11, 215-pound sophomore from Philadelphia, Pa., ran for 265 yards on 24 carries and scored three touchdowns to go along with 69 receiving yards, each a career-high, in Temple’s runaway 54-28 win over USF. The 334 all-purpose yards are the fourth-best single-game mark in program history. Saydee also set career marks for longest rush (75) and longest reception (69). His single-game rushing total is fifth on the American Athletic Conference’s chart since the conference was established in 2013.
Kansas heads to Texas Tech for a 6 p.m. CT tilt on ESPN-Plus while Temple plays host to Houston at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN-Plus. Other candidates for the honor in Week 10 included:
- Bijan Robinson, Texas: The sophomore ran for 209 yards on 30 carries and scored his 12th rushing
touchdown this season as Texas won at Kansas State, 34-27. It was his second career 200-yard game and seventh consecutive 100-yard game, the third-longest streak in program history. Robinson, who added two receptions for 34 yards, has scored a touchdown rushing or receiving in eight of Texas’ nine games this season and 19 of his last 21 games overall.
- La’Damian Webb, South Alabama: Webb ran for a school-record 247 yards on another school-record 35 carries and tied yet another record with four touchdowns as South Alabama won on the road at Georgia Southern, 38-31. The 247 yards included 179 in the second half and were the most in one game since 2018. Webb carried the ball 13 times on South’s final 16 snaps to run out the clock.
The Doak Walker Award presented by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum has been awarded to the nation’s top running back since 1990. For the first time, the award is recognizing a national running back of the week this season. A select 20-person committee from the award’s full voting body of media and past winners chooses the weekly recipient. On July 20, a preseason candidates list was released and semifinalists for the award will be named on Nov. 22. A week later, the three finalists will be announced.
The 2022 Doak Walker Award winner will be unveiled live on The Home Depot College Football Awards, televised by ESPN on Dec. 8. The annual banquet, where the winner and the recipient of the 2022 PwC Doak Walker Legends Award will be honored, will take place in February on the SMU campus.
