Labor Day Weekend has ushered in Fall, and it might be a chillier time of year in The American than usual; at least things are off to a cold start so far. In a week that saw all 11 AAC football programs in action, only Houston, SMU, Tulane, and UCF managed to come out with wins. It's also no secret that the American Athletic Conference is headed into a massive period of change once this season comes to an end. Three schools are departing, and six new members are coming in to fortify the league's ranks.

Houston and UCF winning is certainly good, but they're part of the contingent departing the league next July, and the Coogs win came over incoming UTSA - in absolute thrilling fashion, by the way. The Roadrunners gave fans of the league something to look forward to in the future, especially if UTSA can continue to pack the Alamodome like it did in the instant classic against Houston.

Meanwhile, SMU's victory came over North Texas, another program that will be joining the AAC in 2023. In fact, Tulane's win over UMass was the only one against an FBS opponent that's not joining The American next season (UCF beat FCS South Carolina State).

Looking at the rest of the incoming schools, Rice fell at USC. FAU fell at Ohio. And Charlotte lost to FCS William & Mary, while UAB brought home a season opening victory against Alabama A&M. If you're a fan of the AAC, it's still way too early to start freaking out. But there is definitely reason for concern.
