Duke head coach Mike Elko announced the naming of DeWayne Carter, Shaka Heyward and Jacob Monk as team captains for the 2022 season.

The three returning lettermen were elected by their teammates. Carter returns to the leadership role after serving in the role last season.

In 26 career games, including 13 starts, Carter has compiled 49 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, four caused fumbles, six quarterback pressures and three pass breakups. The Pickerington, Ohio, native posted a career-high six tackles and 1.5 sacks against Virginia Tech and North Carolina, respectively, in 2022.

Heyward, a redshirt senior linebacker, has played 39 career games with 29 starts. He has compiled 246 tackles, 26.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, two interceptions, three fumble recoveries, one pass breakup, and 11 quarterback pressures. The Dacula, Ga., product has eight double-digit tackle games, including a career-high 16 stops against North Carolina A&T in 2021.

Monk, a three-year starter along the offensive line, has played 2,411 snaps throughout 35 career games. Last season he helped open paths for running back Ma­taeo Durant to rush for a program single-season record 1,241 yards.

Duke's 2022 season opener is Friday, Sept. 2 against Temple. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium and will be broadcast on ACC Network.
