If someone ever tells you that Spring Games in college football don't matter, kindly point to cornerback Justyn Rhett to shut them up. Rhett, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound DB from Bishop Gorman High School in Nevada, is one of the most highly recruited corners in the country for the class of 2023. And he flipped his commitment after attending a Spring Game.
More specifically, Rhett changed his commitment from playing for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to donning Red and Black for Georgia after attending the Bulldogs Spring Game on April 16th.
Rhett's father had some insight into why his son changed his commitment from Notre Dame to Georgia:
“Honestly I think what it came down to, the recruiting process never stopped and I think the relationship he built over there with the staff, the coaches, Francis Brown the new DB coach over there has done an amazing job with Justyn,” Rhett’s father Troy said. “Our ability to go down there and see the SEC and see the campus and meet with Coach (Kirby) Smart and Coach (Will) Muschamp it all played a key role with that and Justyn and his comfort in that environment.”
So maybe it was Notre Dame's lack of follow through, as much as it was the Spring Game in Athens.
Rhett joins Marcus Washington Jr. as defensive backs committed to Georgia in the Class of 2023. Rhett is the ninth overall commitment for Georgia in the class, and the sixth four-star recruit for the Bulldogs.
