Syracuse football defensive coordinator Tony White and offensive line coach Mike Schmidt will return for the 2022 season.
"I'm thrilled that Coach Schmidt and Coach White will be back for the 2022 season," said head coach Dino Babers. "While the remainder of the coaching staff will be finalized in the near future, I'm excited that we've retained these two outstanding coaches as we continue to build for next season."
In 2021, White presided over statistically the best Syracuse defense in more than a decade. The Orange finished the regular season ranked 22nd nationally in total defense, surrendering 330 yards per game, which was the lowest total at Syracuse since 2010. White's youthful defense featured three Freshmen All-Americans in 2020, and just three of the 11 starting spots in 2021 were filled by players in their final season of eligibility.
In his first season with the program this year, Schmidt's offensive line unit helped pave the way for Sean Tucker to break the program's single-season rushing record, while quarterback Garrett Shrader posted the second-most rushing yards by a quarterback, and second-most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in program history. The Orange offense did so while starting seven-different offensive line combinations, the third-most in the nation. Additionally, only one of the eight offensive linemen to make at least one start this season was in their final season of eligibility.
