Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins completed a sweep of college football’s top defensive honors Thursday as he was named as the winner of the 2020 Chuck Bednarik Award as part of The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.
Collins had additionally won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy in December. Both awards are presented to the nation’s top defensive player
Collins becomes the second American Athletic Conference player to win both the Bednarik Award and the Nagurski Trophy in the conference’s eight seasons, joining former Temple linebacker Tyler Matakevich, who won both awards in 2015.
Collins was selected for the Bednarik Award among a group of three finalists that included Notre Dame linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II.
The Bednarik Award completes a remarkable collection of postseason honors for Collins, who also earned consensus All-America status and was the unanimous choice as the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first player in conference history to win unanimous player-of-the-year honors. He additionally was the runner-up for the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker.
Collins registered 53 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss. four sacks, four interceptions, a fumble recovery and two pass breakups in the 2020 season. Two of his takeaways were returned for touchdowns, including a highlight-reel 96-yard pick-six that was the game-winning score in overtime against Tulane.
