Boise State held the lead for the remainder of the half and were ahead by as many as 10 points on multiple occasions. Buchanan, Cardenas and Degenhart each scored in double figures to lead the team in the initial 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs began the second half by scoring 13 of the first 19 points to trim their deficit to five. Boise State, however, responded in kind and used back-to-back baskets by Buchanan, including a long ball, to push the lead back to eight.

Responding to Butler's run, the Broncos used a 12-4 spurt to regain a double-digit advantage. Spanning nearly eight minutes from the 16:51 to the 8:59 mark, Boise State turned a 56-51 game into a 16-point lead.
