Senior guard Jaden Akins led Michigan State with 16 points as the Spartans topped New Mexico, 71-63, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night at Rocket Arena to advance to the Sweet 16.
The Spartans (29-6) will now face sixth-seeded Ole Miss (24-11) in a South Regional semifinal matchup on Friday in Atlanta at 7:09 p.m. on CBS.
Akins was 7-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, to lead the Spartans. Junior guard Tre Holloman had 14 points, including two 3-pointers, and dished out four assists, while senior forward Frankie Fidler scored 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field. Junior center Carson Cooper led the team with eight rebounds and had four points and sophomore forward Coen Carr grabbed six rebounds with eight points.

- After trailing for all of the first half, the Spartans took five-point leads twice in the second half, with New Mexico tying the game at 51-all with less than eight minutes left.
- Michigan State responded with a 12-3 run over a 2:34, taking a 63-54 lead on a 3-pointer from Holloman.

- MSU chipped away and used its own 12-5 run, over 5:42, and pulled to within 29-26 after a driving layup from Holloman with 2:03 left, forcing the Lobos to call a timeout.
- Holloman hit 1-of-2 free throws with one minute left to make it 31-29 and the Spartans had a chance to tie for take the lead in the waning seconds but could not connect.
