Brandon Angel scored 15 points to lead four Ducks in double figures as the Oregon men's basketball team bounced back from its first loss with a 79-61 win Sunday over Stephen F. Austin before 5,792 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
The No. 12 Ducks (10-1) led just 6-2 at the first media timeout, then went on a 12-2 run out of that break and led by double digits the rest of the game. Jadrian Tracey and Supreme Cook scored 14 points each, and Nate Bittle added 13.
"We picked it up on defense," Tracey said. "That kind of led to a lot of our transition points and stuff like that. And whenever we get our defense going, that always sparks us on the offensive end."
The UO men won despite being outrebounded, 36-34, and committing a season-high 19 turnovers. The Lumberjacks had 19 offensive rebounds.
"That game, we scheduled it for a purpose," UO coach Dana Altman said. "We knew they'd be really physical. … We spent the last two days really trying to get ready for it, and we didn't do a good enough job handling the pressure or getting those defensive rebounds."
How It Happened: A three-pointer by Bittle and an Angel three-point play gave Oregon the first six points of the game, and the Ducks didn't allow a field goal until the 16:26 mark of the first half. Those were the only points at the first media timeout of the half, but the Ducks broke the game open coming out of the break.
"They have a little different defensive style than a lot of teams we've played, a lot of teams in the country," Angel said. "So we knew going in we had to get adjusted, and we talked about trying to get adjusted as quick as we can."
Kwame Evans Jr. had five points during the 12-2 run that put Oregon up 18-4. Back-to-back three-pointers by Keeshawn Barthelemy and Angel made it 24-8, and a three by Tracey capped the scoring by the Ducks in the first half as they led 37-23 at halftime.
Oregon's largest lead of the game was 23, first at 61-38 after a pair of thunderous dunks by Cook on consecutive possessions. Tracey nailed a three-pointer and then scored in transition late in the game for a 79-57 lead, before the Lumberjacks scored the final two buckets of the evening.
Notable: Cook's 14 points were a season high. … Tracy set a season high with seven rebounds to lead the Ducks on Sunday. … Evans left the game in the second half with a knee injury, but Altman said the Ducks were cautiously optimistic he had avoided major structural damage.
Up Next: The Ducks face Stanford in San Jose, Calif., on Saturday (5 p.m., Big Ten Network).
