West Virginia University men's basketball coach Darian DeVries has announced the signing of Jonathan Powell to a national letter-of-intent for the 2024-25 season.
Powell, a 6-foot-6, 180-pound guard from Dayton, Ohio, attends Centerville High in Centerville, Ohio. He will be a freshman at WVU in 2024-25.
Powell was named the Division I Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year in 2023-24. He averaged 19.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game last season for Centerville, which finished 20-9. Powell scored 17 points against Cleveland St. Ignatius in the Division I state championship game. He shot 46.6% from the field and nearly 40% from 3-point range for the season.
"We are pumped to have Jonathan joining us," DeVries said. "He has terrific size and skill which gives him great versatility at both ends of the floor. He's very self-motivated and has a passion and desire to be great."
Powell was a 2022-23 First Team All-Ohio selection in Division I after scoring 16.7 points to go with 3.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game as a junior. He hit 49% of his shots from the floor and 41% from 3. Powell had 11 20-point games, including six straight during the season.
Powell played his first two seasons at Chaminade Julienne. He averaged 16.8 points as a sophomore and 13.1 points as a freshman when he helped the Eagles reach the D-II state tournament. Powell earned Third Team All-Ohio honors in Division II as a sophomore.
