Tulane University men's basketball junior Sion James was honored nationally as a member of the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District ® Division I Men's Basketball Team, the organization announced recently.
James earned the honor by performing well in the classroom posting a 3.79 cumulative GPA and on the court averaging a career-best 14.0 points per game. The Sugar Hill, Georgia, native started all 31 games for the Green Wave this season averaging 5.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.6 steals to with his 14.0 points per contest.
The junior guard also became the first player to win the American Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award twice securing the honor in back-to-back seasons (2023 & 2024). James led the AAC in minutes per game at 36.75 while recording 26 games in double figures including six games with at least 20 points.
In order to be a member of the CSC's Academic All-District Team, student-athletes need to have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or above, be a sophomore or higher in academic class plus are required to have participated in at least 90 percent of the team's competitions this season or start at least 66 percent of the team's games.
The College Sports Communicators, former the College Sports Information Director of America, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes football honorees in four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
As an Academic All-District ® honoree James now advances to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First and second-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced on April 17.
As a team, Tulane posted a 14-17 record during the 2023-24 season. The Green Wave ranked second in the conference in scoring with 81.94 points per game and field goal percentage connecting at a 47.6 percent clip. Tulane also ranked third in the league in three-point percentage at 35.7 percent and turnover margin at 1.7. The charity stripe was the catalyst for the Wave during the season as the team led the conference in free throw attempts and makes per game while ranking second and fourth nationally in those categories.
