No. 4-ranked Purdue bounced back from its first loss of the year and improved to 8-1 overall with an 87-68 win over Iowa at Mackey Arena. The Boilermakers have now won eight of their last 10 games against Iowa.
Purdue has won six straight games against Iowa in Mackey Arena, winning the six games by a combined 114 points (19.0 PPG).
The win was Matt Painter's 210th win in Big Ten play, now tied for sixth on the Big Ten's all-time wins list in conference games only (Branch McCracken – 210). Purdue is now 74-12 at home against Big Ten teams since the start of the 2014-15 season. Against unranked Big Ten teams at Mackey Arena, Purdue is 62-6 in that span. Purdue has scored at least 85 points in back-to-back conference games for the first time since Jan. 20 to Jan. 25, 2018 (87 vs. Iowa; 92 vs. Michigan).
Purdue improved to 15-4 in home Big Ten openers under Matt Painter, having won eight straight league home openers. Iowa is ranked No. 40 in KenPom. Purdue is now 5-1 this season in games against the KenPom top-50. No other team in America has more than three top-50 wins. Purdue is now 15-1 (.938) all-time on December 4, the best winning percentage for a date on the calendar (min. 10 games).
After having 17 turnovers against Northwestern, Purdue had just eight turnovers against the Hawks, recording 24 assists on 34 made field goals. Edey recorded his 25th career 20-10 game, now tied for the most for a Big Ten player since the 2010-11 season. In Big Ten play, Edey is averaging 30.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.0 assists per game, shooting 70.4 percent from the field. Lance Jones scored a season-high 17 points, 14 of which came in the second half, including nine in the first two minutes of the second half. Braden Smith had just two points, but added eight assists and six rebounds against just one turnover in 25 minutes of action. He was +33 in his 25 minutes of action. Smith is averaging 11.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game.
