Texas’ Marcus Carr and Baylor’s Keyonte George earned the first weekly honors of 2023 as Carr was named Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and George was awarded Newcomer of the Week.
Each picked up their second honor of the season.
In UT's two victories last week, Carr averaged 27.0 points, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals in 32.5 minutes per game. He converted 54.8 percent (17-31) from the floor, including 66.7 percent (12-18) from three-point range, and 88.9 percent (8-9) from the free throw line while posting six assists against just two turnovers. During the win over Texas A&M-Commerce, Carr registered 41 points while hitting 13-of-19 FG, including 10-of-15 threes, and 5-of-6 FT. He added four assists against one turnover and two steals in 30 minutes. Carr tied the school record for most 3-point FG made in a game, equaling the mark of 10 set by Al Coleman vs. K-State on Jan. 12, 1997. It marked the first 40-point performance by a Texas player since Reggie Freeman scored 43 in a home win against Fresno State on Dec. 14, 1996. Carr tied his collegiate career high in scoring. He also had 41 while playing for Minnesota at Nebraska on Feb. 27, 2021. Carr set career highs in FG made and 3-point FG made. He also tied the school record for most points scored in a half (33) in the opening period and set the school record for most points scored in a first half. Carr set the school record for most 3-pointers made in a half with eight in the first 20 minutes. Carr registered 33 points in 18 minutes of action during the first period. The 41 points tied for the eighth-highest single-game scoring total in UT history (record is 49, twice). During Saturday's win at Oklahoma, Carr recorded a team-high 13 points, dished two assists and tied his career-high with four steals in 36 minutes. His turnaround jumper in the lane with 48 seconds left gave the Longhorns the lead for good and he sealed the victory by hitting a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining.
Playing without one of its leading scorers in LJ Cryer, George picked up the slack for Baylor by averaging 18.5 points last week, highlighted by 21 against Nicholls in Baylor's first game after Christmas. George was efficient from deep going four-of-six from three-point range and tied a season-high with seven made free throws on a season-best eight trips to the line. It was his fourth 20-point performance of the season. George was one of BU's main scoring threats, notching 16, in the conference opener at Iowa State and responded from a tough first half with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting in the final 20 minutes, his highest-scoring half of the season.
