A trio of top 21 selections highlighted four Big 12 players chosen in the 2022 NBA Draft. The Conference had at least three first round picks for the 16th time since 1997.
Baylor and Kansas, the 2021 and 2022 national champions, respectively, each produced a pair of selections. BU freshman Jeremy Sochan was the first Conference player taken off the board and will stay in the state of Texas as he was chosen ninth overall by the San Antonio Spurs. Big 12 Player of the Year Ochai Agbaji was the first of two first-rounders for the Jayhawks when he was picked 14th by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Teammate Christian Braun went to the Denver Nuggets as the 21st selection. The Bears had a second freshman selected with Kendall Brown going in the second round to the Minnesota Timberwolves with reports he will be traded to the Indiana Pacers.
This year's draft marked the 25th time in 26 seasons for the Big 12 to produce first-round picks. It’s the 17th consecutive year that at least one Big 12 standout has been taken in the NBA Draft lottery as one of the top 14 choices. Baylor has had lottery picks in back-to-back seasons for the first time. Agbaji is the 18th KU lottery selection.
Overall, 88 players were chosen in the past 15 drafts. A total of 135 players from the Big 12 have been selected since the first league season.
KU has registered 36 draft picks since the Big 12 began play, more than any other league school. Texas is next with 23 draftees, followed by Iowa State with 14 and Baylor with 12. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have 10 each. Texas Tech (7), Kansas State (3), West Virginia (2) and TCU (1) round out the Big 12 team draft totals.
