Kansas’ Jalen Wilson collected Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week while Baylor’s James Akinjo was named Newcomer of the Week. It was the second career honor for Wilson and the third this season for Akinjo.
Wilson opened the week posting his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds at No. 20 Texas. The sophomore forward was 6-for-10 (60.0%) from the field. In the win against Oklahoma, Wilson scored 22 points on 8-of-12 (66.7%) shooting and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. The 22 points were his second-most this season (23 vs. WVU, 1/15) and his third 20-point effort of the season. For the week, Wilson averaged 20.0 points and 10.0 rebounds and was 14-for-22 (63.6%) from the field.
Akinjo had a big week in the absence of BU's leading scorer LJ Cryer. He averaged 15 points, 7.5 assists and 2.5 steals in Baylor's wins over Kansas State and No. 20 Texas. He had 15 points and team-highs of eight assists and three steals in 35 minutes of the win at Kansas State, and he followed with 15 points and team-highs of seven assists and two steals in 38 minutes of Saturday’s win over Texas. He leads the Big 12 with 5.7 assists per game, ranks second in the league with 2.2 steals per game and ninth with 13.1 points per game.
