Fueled by a 19-3 first-half run, Northern Kentucky routed Milwaukee 75-39 Wednesday at UWM Panther Arena and won its eighth game in the last 10 outings.
The Norse led by as many as 36 points, improved to 13-10 (9-5 Horizon League) and dealt the Panthers a sixth straight loss. Milwaukee dropped to 7-18 (5-11).
STATS LEADERS
- Chris Brandon notched his second Norse double-double in the last three games with a NKU career-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. Six of his rebounds were on the offensive glass. He also had a double-double (15 points, 13 rebounds) against Oakland Feb. 4.
- Marques Warrick scored 15 points with six rebounds and five assists.
- Sam Vinson added 13 points and tied a career high with eight rebounds. He added two assists and two steals.
- Bryson Langdon tied a career high with nine assists.
TURNING POINT
- After trailing by five points just 2:25 into play, NKU mounted a 19-3 run and maintained control the rest of the way.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- Patrick Baldwin Jr. buried a 3-pointer for an early Milwaukee five-point lead. Sam Vinson's ensuing back-to-back 3-pointers ignited a 13-0 run that vaulted NKU ahead by eight. The Panthers went scoreless for 7:44 and missed 11 straight field goal attempts.
- Chris Brandon nabbed five of NKU's first 10 rebounds.
- Donovan Newby curbed the Panthers' empty possessions with a 3-pointer at the 10:09 mark but NKU scored again quickly thereafter and stretched its run to 19-3. The Panthers missed 14 of 15 field goal attempts over a nine-minute stretch and shot just 21.1% in the first 12 minutes.
- The Panthers scored seven straight points and trimmed an 11-point deficit to four. Marques Warrick's first basket of the day, a 3-pointer, ended a three-minute scoring drought and the Norse further expanded their edge soon after.
- NKU led 30-22 at halftime behind Sam Vinson's eight points, Trevon Faulkner's seven points and Chris Brandon's six points and eight boards. NKU held a 25-18 edge on the glass and outscored the Panthers 10-4 in second-chance points.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- The Norse picked up where they left off and pieced together an 16-0 run. Sam Vinson's third 3-pointer of the night gave NKU an 18-point lead less than four minutes into the frame.
- Chris Brandon reached double-double status at the 15:58 mark of the second half with a dunk that increased his point total to 10 points. He'd already amassed 11 rebounds.
- The Panthers were held scoreless until the 13:32 mark of the second half. They later trailed by as many as 36 points.
- NKU capitalized on another Panthers drought with a 12-1 run and 65-32 advantage.
- The Norse held Milwaukee to 25% second-half shooting and outscored the home team 45-17 after halftime.
GAME NOTES
- Adrian Nelson moved into No. 7 on NKU's All-Time Rebounding list. He passed Chris Wall (666 rebounds) Richard Derkson (668) to claim sole control of seventh place. He had seven rebounds against Milwaukee and now has 669 for his career.
- NKU dominated the glass 46-28 and scored 17 second-chance points. The Norse outplayed Milwaukee in fast-break points (14-1), points in the paint (36-12) and points off turnovers (15-7).
- The Norse converted 91% of their free throws (10-for-11) and shot 45% from the field.
- The victory ensured a regular-season split between the teams, as Milwaukee defeated NKU in a Jan. 1 outing at BB&T Arena.
