Behind a sluggish start and an energized Arkansas Baptist start, Little Rock found itself in an early deficit against the Buffaloes and a seven-point halftime lead. But The Trojans outscored the Buffaloes 46-22 in the second half, pulling away for a 91-60 victory Sunday afternoon at the Jack Stephens Center.
Little Rock improves to 3-0 on the season, getting three wins at home in a span of five days.
"We learned some things over the course of this week, and we were able to get some different guys some minutes and try out some different combinations," said head coach Darrell Walker. "We're getting ready a long road trip, beginning with three really tough games in California and Florida. Hopefully this week will help prepare us for a challenging stretch coming up."
Little Rock once again had five players finish in double figures, led by a 20-point, seven-rebound performance from Kevin Osawe. The junior transfer played 21 minutes and went 7-of-13 from the floor, including 5-of-6 from three-point range, helping spark the Trojan offense in both halves.
Nikola Maric had another solid performance inside, registering his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, going 8-of-12 from the free throw line while dishing out three assists.
Jovan Stulic added 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting with four rebounds and four assists while CJ White added 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and a game-high seven rebounds. DeAntoni Gordon was the fifth Trojan to finish in double figures, scoring 12 points with seven rebounds.
Isaiah Palermo and D.J. Smith both had seven points for Little Rock with Smith grabbing five rebounds. Marko Andric added five points and three boards.
For the game, the Trojans shot 42.3% from the floor, shaking off a sluggish first half in which it made just 13 of its 34 attempts (38.2%). The Little Rock three-point attack was efficient on the afternoon with the Trojans knocking down 13-of-28 (46.4%), but the team struggled from the free throw line, making just 64.3% of its attempts (18-of-28).
Little Rock again won the rebounding battle, holding a 49-38 advantage on Arkansas Baptist, while its defense once again proved frustrating, forcing 18 Buffalo turnovers, compared to just seven for the Trojans. The seven turnovers is the second-fewest under head coach Darrell Walker, one more than the six committed against ULM on February 27, 2020.
Two days after scoring the most points in Jack Stephens Center history, Little Rock struggled from the floor in the early going. The Trojans made just one of its first 11 field goal attempts through the opening seven minutes, watching as Arkansas Baptist built an early 17-7 lead. At the midway point of the first half, Little Rock was just 4-of-17 (23.5%) from the floor as the Buffaloes held a 24-14 lead.
Little Rock would regain its composure, reeling off 12 unanswered points to turn the 24-14 deficit into a 26-24 lead with five different Trojans scoring during the surge. The run would reach 30-12 over a nine minute stretch in the first half, building an eight point lead at 44-36 before taking a 45-38 lead into intermission.
The Trojans would start to pull away early in the second half, scoring 15 of the first 19 points to extend their lead to 19 at 61-42 with 13:37 remaining. After the Buffaloes pulled to within 15 at 61-46, Little Rock put the game away with a 14-0 run over a four-minute span, pushing the advantage to 29 at 75-46.
Little Rock would lead by as many as 36 at 91-55 with 1:09 remaining before five-straight points for Arkansas Baptist lowered the final deficit to 91-60.
With the three home games now behind it, Little Rock prepares for a challenging six-game road trip which will take the Trojans to five different states and all four time zones. The swing begins in California with the first game of the Jacksonville Classic, facing Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, November 17. Opening tip against the Lions is set for 9 p.m. CT at Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles.
