A career-night from Trevon Faulkner wasn't quite enough for the Northern Kentucky men's basketball team, which dropped a 70-69 overtime decision to UNC Greensboro. Early in the second half, Faulkner buried a three to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau.

The Norse sit at 1-1 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 2-0.

STATS LEADERS  

  • Trevon Faulkner led the way for the Norse with 28 total points, shooting 7-of-19 from the field and 6-of-14 from long range.
  • Marques Warrick and Bryson Langdon each finished the night scoring in double-figures, with 14 and 10, respectively.
  • Adrian Nelson anchored NKU on the boards, pulling down 11 total rebounds. Nelson also finished with seven points and one block.
  • Sam Vinson helped orchestrated the offense tonight with seven total assists. He also impacted the game with five points and five rebounds.
  • Trey Robinson, Vinson and Nelson all totaled three steals in this contest as well.

FIRST HALF SUMMARY  

  • NKU started the game in control, posting a 15-10 advantage after a pull up jumper from Warrick.
  • UNC-Greensboro found its rhythm five minutes into the opening half, as a 13-5 run sparked the Spartans. Faulkner looked to end the run with a three-pointer on a dish from Warrick with 8:54 remaining
  • The Spartans continued to build off that original run, as a layup from Bas Leyte saw UNCG up 34-23 at the 3:07 mark.
  • The Norse ended on a high note heading into the locker room at half, as Langdon knocked down a shot with seconds left, putting the score at 38-28.

SECOND HALF SUMMARY  

  • Northern Kentucky used a 12-0 run to open the half and erase the 10-point lead it faced at intermission.
  • Faulkner found Warrick on a layup to begin the run and then at the 18:14 mark Robinson found Faulkner for his sixth three of the game, which was his 20th point of the night and pushed him past the 1,000-point plateau.
  • With Chris Brandon's offensive rebound and putback, the Norse extended their run to 16-2 and built a 44-40 lead.
  • UNCG fought back and tied the game at 60, but Warrick hit a three from the top of the key with 40 seconds left.
  • After a quick bucket from the Spartans and one free throw made from Faulkner, it was Mohammed Abdulsalam with a layup with seconds remaining to tie the game at 64.
  • Faulkner got a look as the clock expired, but the would-be game winner hit iron multiple times before rimming out.

OVERTIME SUMMARY  

  • Langdon got the Norse on the board first in overtime with a converted and-one layup to see NKU up 67-64.
  • UNC-Greensboro's Kobe Langley tied up the game at 68-68 with a driving layup with just 2:52 remaining.
  • The Norse went ahead 69-68 with a made Nelson free throw with only 0:42 left on the clock.
  • The Spartans found a game winner in a De'Monte Buckingham put back layup at 0:21.

GAME NOTES  

  • Faulkner's big night saw him reach the 1,000 point club after connecting from three early in the second half, becoming the 30th player in program history to reach the milestone.
  • Faulkner had himself a game, posting a career-high in three's with six drained and also recorded a career-high in total points scored with 28.
  • Nelson continued to make his presence known down low, totaling 11 boards on the night. He has now accumulated 20 overall rebounds through these first two games.
  • Northern Kentucky shot 35 percent (23-of-65) from the floor and 30 percent (10-of-33) from deep. UNC Greensboro connected at a 46 percent clip (29-of-63) on its field-goal attempts and 33 percent (5-of-15) from deep.
  • NKU continued at a high assist rate, distributing 16 on 23 made buckets.
