The 19th-ranked University of Texas baseball team dropped its season opener to Louisville, 4-3, in extra innings Friday evening at Globe Life Field.
After freshman third baseman Adrian Rodriguez put the Longhorns (0-1) ahead with a solo homer in the 10th inning, the Cardinals (1-0) answered with two runs in the bottom half to punctuate the first day of the Shriners Children's College Showdown.
Louisville left fielder Zion Rose tied the contest with an RBI single, before center fielder Lucas Moore delivered the walk-off base hit.
The Cardinals scored all four of their runs in the final two frames, as Texas was one out away from securing a win in its first contest under head coach Jim Schlossnagle.
With the Longhorns leading by a pair in the ninth, Louisville strung together a rally. The Cardinals put the tying tallies in scoring position, setting the stage for outfielder Garret Pike.
Pike broke the scoreless drought for Louisville with a game-tying two RBI single to right, igniting the first-base dugout.
Texas jumped on the board early, as outfielder Will Gasparino crushed a two-run opposite-field blast in the second off of Louisville ace Patrick Forbes.
For the Longhorns, senior left-handed pitcher Jared Spencer shutdown the Cardinals in his debut in the burnt orange.
Spencer tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, striking out six batters in a no-decision. Following a hit by pitch to open his outing, the Indiana State transfer retired 11 of the next 13 batters, limiting Louisville to four hits along the way.
Cardinals junior Tucker Biven (1-0) recorded the win in relief, while seventh-year redshirt senior Will Mercer (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
The Longhorns will look to bounce back Saturday, as Texas takes on Ole Miss. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Globe Life Field.
