Texas’ Peyton Powell (player), Lebarron Johnson Jr. (pitcher) and Texas Tech’s TJ Pompey (newcomer) claimed Big 12 baseball weekly awards for the second week of the season.
Powell hit .471 with three home runs and eight RBIs, helping Texas outscore its opponents 35-3 in four wins and claim his first career Big 12 weekly honor. While he has hit safely in all seven games this season, his week was highlighted with a 4-for-5 game in the series finale against Cal Poly—his first career multi-homer game. The senior third baseman had two extra-base hits in the midweek game against Houston Christian, driving in three runs. For the week, the Robinson, Texas native finished with a 1.618 OPS.
Johnson Jr. threw eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits on Friday night against Cal Poly. The right-hander from Jacksonville, Florida struck out eight Mustangs, and never allowed more than one batter to reach in any inning. His start set the tone for the Longhorn hurlers in the series, as they shut out Cal Poly over the entire three-game set, a feat only accomplished one other time by Texas since 1971. He retired the last eight batters he faced, to pick up the win and his second career pitcher of the week honor.
Pompey hit .458 with 11 runs scored and 11 RBIs as the Red Raiders posted four blowout wins. The freshman infielder had multiple RBIs in four games, including five in the Saturday game against Texas Southern, and scored at least one run in every game. The Coppell, Texas native had two four-hit games, and went deep in each of his last two games. The exploratory business and industry major had a .519 on-base percentage and a 1.311 slugging percentage (1.830 OPS) for his first career weekly award.
