The Texas Tech baseball team completed the series sweep of Kent State with a pair of wins, 8-1 in game one and 7-5 in game two, in a Sunday doubleheader at Rip Griffin Park. The Red Raiders secured the series' first win on Saturday, 10-7.

In Sunday's pair of games, Ty Coleman led the offense as he went a combined 5-of-9 with two doubles, two home runs, six RBIs, and four runs scored. He tallied a .556 on-base percentage and a 1.444 slugging percentage in two starts in the clean-up position.

The pitching staff produced 27 strikeouts on the day, with the K count led by both starters. Game one starter Brandon Birdsell and game two starter, Mason Molina, both recorded seven strikeouts each in their respective outings.

Birdsell earned his first win of the season, setting the home team up with the 8-1 win in a 5.0 inning outing. Molina, however, was lifted at the start of the fourth inning in game two as he carried a high pitch count despite a solid line of allowing just one hit, and one earned run, to go along with seven strikeouts and three walks. Game two was much more by committee as six Red Raiders saw time on the mound with Jase Lopez earning the win in relief and Trendan Parish picking up his second save in as many days.

Dillon Carter, from the leadoff spot, and Parker Kelly, from the nine-hole, joined Coleman having a Sunday with an on-base percentage better .500. In two games, Kelly went 3-of-7, walked and scored a run, while Carter was 3-of-8, walked once and was hit-by-pitch once. He scored four times and hit a home run that provided one RBI.

Game 1
Texas Tech jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Carter hit a home run at the lead-off spot to start the game. The scoring continued in the third with three runs to put Tech on top 4-0. Cole Stilwell and Coleman both hit doubles, Coleman's scored Stilwell. Dalton Porter picked up his second single in his second at-bat of the game, but this one plated a run, while Hudson White produced a run on a ground out to wrap up the scoring in the inning.

Kent State's one run scored in the game came in the top of the fourth. A single that was aided by a fielding error and a wild pitch.

Texas Tech scored three more in the seventh, and another in the eighth to push Tech to its' 8-1 win.

Game 2
Tech starter Molina produced a groundout to the leadoff hitter and went on to strike out six-straight batters before allowing a single in the third inning.

Jace Jung hit his first home run of the 2022 season in the bottom of the first to jump-start the Red Raiders' second game, giving the home team a 2-0 lead as Carter got on base with a single. Tech scored one more in third before Kent State rallied for five straight runs to take the lead, 5-3, before Tech would score again.

Molina started the fourth but did not record an out, giving way to Josh Sanders after walking the lead-off hitter. Kent State would score four runs in the inning as KSU jumped on Tech for three singles and a hit by pitch. A double-play would slow down the threat before Sanders closed the inning with a strikeout. In the fifth, Kent State scored on a solo home run before Tech would begin its seventh inning rally.

Before the Red Raiders' rally, a crucial overturned call via an umpire review signaled the last out of the top of the sixth inning, taking a run off of the board for Kent State, and leaving it a two-run advantage for the visitors.

The first three Tech batters in the seventh each got on base safely as Kelly and Stilwell singled and Carter was aboard with a walk. Jace Jung produced a run with a productive ground out, scoring Kelly from third. Next up, Coleman hit his second home run of the game, a three-run blast to turn the 5-4 deficit into a 7-5 lead.

The bullpen combination of Lopez, earning the win, and Parish, picking up the save, shut down the final three innings collectively with no hits, no runs, and a combined four strikeouts and one walk.

With the pair of wins, Tech moves to 5-2, and closeout its homestand 4-0 after a 1-2 to start in Arlington.
