The University of Dayton baseball team used a late offensive surge to complete a series sweep at North Carolina A&T, winning 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Matthew Maloney drove in senior Jay Curtis on a go-ahead pinch-hit RBI single to give the Flyers their first 3-0 start dating back to 2005.

The Flyers trailed 3-0 heading into the eighth inning, but scored three runs to tie it and took the lead in the ninth. Juniors Ben Jones and Keagan Calero each picked up three hits on the afternoon, with Jones also driving in two runs for Dayton.

Redshirt freshman Andrew Casey made his first career start at first base in the contest, reaching in his first four plate appearances and scoring the first run of the game, while Curtis picked up a key stolen base in the ninth inning that put him in scoring position for Maloney's single.

ON THE MOUND
Redshirt freshman Chris Peguero made his first career start for the Flyers, pitching into the sixth inning for Dayton. Peguero went 5.1 innings on the mound, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four.

Sophomore Austin Brush relieved him in the sixth, stranding a pair of base runners. Junior Mark Manfredi entered in the seventh after Brush faced the first two hitters of the inning, allowing just one hit and picking up his first strikeout as a Flyer. Sophomore Nick Wissman relieved Manfredi, picking off an Aggie baserunner at second and striking out another to end the seventh inning.

Senior Bryce Hellgeth went the rest of the way, picking up his first win of the season. Hellgeth allowed just one hit and didn't allow a run in his two innings on the mound. The Arlington Heights, Ill., native kept the NC A&T offense off the scoreboard to seal the sweep for the Flyers.

SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 2: (1-0 Aggies)
Peguero struck out the first batter of the inning, but a walk and a double put the Flyers in their first deficit of the season. The redshirt freshman retired the next two hitters to keep the score at 1-0.

Bottom 7: (3-0 Aggies)
NC A&T opened the seventh with a hit by pitch and a base hit to left center to put two on. Another single to center made it 2-0 and a balk by Manfredi extended the deficit to three.

Top 8: (3-3 Tie)
Casey drew a one-out walk, and Calero doubled to right center to put two on with just one out in the inning. With junior Omar Daniels up, Casey scored on a wild pitch with Calero moving up to third. Daniels would walk and advance to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Jones came through with a single into left center that would score both runners and tie the game at 3-3.

Top 9: (4-3 Flyers)
Curtis would draw a one-out walk and steal second to put the go-ahead run into scoring position. Maloney then came through with his base hit to score Curtis and finalize the scoring. Hellgeth would go out and get the three outs to finish the sweep.
