The 2020 Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship kicks off Saturday, December 19, when Iowa State takes on Oklahoma in an 11 a.m. CT kickoff at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The game is nationally televised on ABC. OU is making its 12 appearance in the title game since 2000 and ISU is in its first championship game.
The Big 12 is the only autonomy conference in which 80% of its members have four or more wins. It’s one of two A5 conferences with 60% of its membership having five-plus victories.
Big 12 defenses are allowing opposing offenses an average of 382.3 yards per game, which is the best output for the Conference since 2009. The average is second amongst the nation’s five autonomy conferences. The Conference is third in scoring defense with teams allowing a combined average of 28.6 points per contest. West Virginia is fifth nationally in total defense with 297.2 yards allowed per game, followed by Oklahoma at No. 16 (322.3), Iowa State at No. 25 (338.1) and TCU at No. 32 (350.9). WVU is 24th in scoring defense (20.4), while Iowa State follows at No. 27 (21.3) and Oklahoma at No. 29 (22.0).
Oklahoma State and Oklahoma rank in the top-five of 3rd down conversion percentage defense. OSU is No. 2 nationally, allowing a conversion rate of 26.3%, while OU is fourth at 27.3%.
Iowa State’s Breece Hall paces the country with 1,357 rushing yards and is fifth nationally with 135.7 yards per game.
An Oklahoma quarterback has led the Big 12 in passer rating the last five seasons and it has been a different QB at the helm in each of the last four. Spencer Rattler’s 174.7 passer rating is the 10th-best in a single-season in the Big 12.
There are four Big 12 returners ranked in the top-five nationally. TCU’s Derius Davis is fourth nationally with 14.5 yards per punt return. Texas’ D’Shawn Jamison is third with 34.1 yards per kick return followed by Baylor’s Trestan Ebner at No. 5 (32.2).
Team-By-Team Notables
Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech and West Virginia did not play in Week 14.
With two interceptions against Oklahoma State, the Baylor defense has forced 17 turnovers in nine games, the defense came into the game leading the Big 12 in turnover margin. The two picks moved Baylor’s total up to 12 on the season, which is the most in the Big 12.
BU’s Christian Morgan picked off a pass for the third consecutive game. The interception tied the team-high of three on the season with J.T. Woods. He also finished one tackle shy of tying his career high after compiling 11 tackles on the day.
Oklahoma State held Baylor to just three points in the Cowboys’ victory, the fewest allowed by OSU since they won 59-3 against Lamar on Sept. 14, 2013.
OSU senior wide receiver Dillon Stoner finished with eight catches for a career-high 247 yards and three touchdowns. It marked the fifth 100-yard receiving game of his career. He became the eighth player in OSU history with 200 yards receiving in a game. Stoner’s 247 receiving yards was the third-highest single-game total in program history, trailing only Adarius Bowman (300 yards vs. Kansas in 2006) and James Washington (296 yards vs. Pittsburgh in 2016).
With the win over Louisiana Tech, TCU has won its last three games and five of the past six.
The Horned Frogs rushed for 333 yards, four shy of a season high, and are 6-0 this season and 101-8 under Patterson when totaling at least 200 yards on the ground. TCU has topped 300 yards in rushing in two of its last three games.
TCU true freshmen running backs Kendre Miller (136) and Zach Evans (130) both topped 100 yards, giving the Horned Frogs their first pair of 100-yard rushers since Darius Anderson (179) and Sewo Olonilua (106) in last year's 34-13 win at Purdue.
TCU’s Ochaun Mathis recorded two sacks to give him a team-best 9.0 on the season, the most by a Horned Frog since Mat Boesen had 11.5 in 2017.
