The score doesn't really do the Fighting Irish justice, because they never really allowed the Bulldogs to have a chance. The 2024 College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl was less a game that was played, and more a game that saw No. 2 Georgia get played by No. 7 Notre Dame.
The Caesars Superdome in New Orleans was rocking with the Fighting Irish living up to the hype and defeating the Bulldogs, 23-10, to advance to the College Football Playoff Semifinals.
Notre Dame's victory was largely attributed to their dominant defensive performance. The Fighting Irish defense stifled Georgia's offense, holding them to just 10 points and forcing two turnovers. Linebacker Jaiden Ausberry had a big day, making a crucial fumble recovery in the first quarter that set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. Safety Adon Shuler also played a key role, consistently causing problems for Georgia's passing game, and making several key tackles.
“The turnovers are the difference in the game, guys,” said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. “I mean, you should know when you turn it over twice and they return a kickoff for a touchdown, you’re not going to have a lot of success.”
Offensively, Notre Dame relied on the dual-threat capabilities of quarterback Riley Leonard. Leonard, who had been the second-leading rusher for the Fighting Irish this season, showcased his versatility by rushing for 32 yards on a key quarterback keeper and completing key passes throughout the game. His ability to extend plays with his legs and make accurate throws under pressure kept Georgia's defense on its toes.
“Our coaches called the game aggressive. Our players executed, put everything on the line,” said Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman. “I’m really proud of them. Proud of the way they handled the events of the last 24 hours.”
Georgia, on the other hand, struggled to find its rhythm on offense. Quarterback Gunner Stockton, who stepped in after Carson Beck's injury, had a difficult time connecting with his receivers and was under constant pressure from Notre Dame's defensive line. Running back Trevor Etienne, who had been a reliable option for the Bulldogs, fumbled the ball in the first quarter, leading to a turnover that Notre Dame capitalized on.
The Bulldogs' offensive line also faced challenges, as they were unable to create consistent running lanes for their backs and protect Stockton effectively. This lack of offensive production ultimately proved to be Georgia's downfall, as they were unable to keep pace with Notre Dame's balanced attack.
In the end, Notre Dame's strong defensive performance and efficient offense were the keys to their victory. The Fighting Irish will now advance to the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl against No. 6 Penn State on January 9, while Georgia will head home to regroup and prepare for the 2025 college football season.
