University of Houston Football seniors Maliq Carr, Jack Martin and Hershey McLaurin have been named to the 2024 National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society, recognizing student-athletes across all divisions for maintaining a 3.2 career GPA or better, the NFF and College Hall of Fame announced.
Members of the NFF Hampshire Honor Society must be either a senior student-athlete who will graduate this spring/summer, and just completed his final season of eligibility in 2023, or a graduate who has been out of high school for 3+ years. On the field, representatives must have been starters or key contributors throughout the 2023 season.
Carr, a first-year tight end with the Cougars, received his Bachelor of Science in Advertising Management from Michigan State where he maintained a career 3.67 GPA and was named a 2023 Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
The Inkster, Mich., native played in 34 games (seven starts) across three seasons for the Spartans. In 2023, he ranked second on the team with a career-high 30 receptions. His 81.9 Pro Football Focus (PFF) overall grade led all FBS transfer tight ends. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Management & Leadership at the University of Houston.
Martin earned his Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Alabama prior to joining the Cougars ahead of the 2023 season. The Dothan, Ala., native is on track to earn his Master of Science in Management & Leadership from the University of Houston this spring. Martin served as the Cougars' primary kicker and kickoff specialist in all 12 games a season ago, connecting on eight field goals and all 34 extra-point opportunities. The 2023-24 UH Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Representative has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA.
McLaurin earned his Bachelor of Arts in Health & Well-Being while maintaining a 3.38 career GPA at West Virginia University prior to transferring to Houston this spring. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Global Retailing from the University of Houston. In two seasons at West Virginia, the Friendship, Miss., native appeared in 24 including eight starts during the 2023 season which featured 44 tackles, six tackles for loss and three breakups.
