Texas Football was named the Cheez-It National Team of the Week, the Football Writers Association of America announced on Monday. The Longhorns defeated then-No. 3 Alabama 34-24 on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Texas' victory snapped a 21-game home winning streak for Alabama and the Longhorns became the first team to defeat the Crimson Tide by double digits at home under head coach Nick Saban. Trailing 16-13 heading into the fourth quarter, Texas scored 21 points in the final frame to claim the program's first-ever non-conference road victory over an AP Top-3 opponent.
Sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers completed 24-of-38 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter to junior wide receiver Adonai Mitchell. Defensively, the Longhorns registered five sacks, the most surrendered by the Tide at home since 2015 (5, Tennessee). Freshman linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. paced the Longhorns with two sacks, the first of his career.
Texas was honored as the national team of the week for the sixth time in program history. UT was last honored following the Longhorns' victory over Oklahoma in 2022.
The Longhorns return home to Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium to host Wyoming on Saturday, Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on LHN.
