Longhorns fans got some good news over the weekend with the announcement that Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian has secured a commitment from K.J. Lacey. The quarterback is the first commit of UT's 2025 recruiting class.
Lacey hails from Tuscaloosa, and had offers from other major programs like Texas A&M, Oregon, Auburn, FSU, Miami, Notre Dame, and Alabama in his own back yard. But Sark has had some good luck recruiting quarterbacks that you might think would end up at other SEC schools.
Texas signed the nation's No. 5 overall player in Arch Manning for the 2023 class, which should also give Lacey time to learn from the sidelines, as Lacey plans to enroll early in January 2025.
The Horns are focused on building up their offense for good reason. UT averaged a paltry 429.5 yards per game in 2022, placing fifth in the Big 12. Quinn Ewers, who was supposed to be the last "Next Coming" left Texas fans yawning with a performance of 2,177 yards for 15 touchdowns in 10 games last season. A "competition" between Manning and Ewers for the starting job in 2023 is expected.
As for Lacey, he said,
They asked me, “Why Texas?” I say, “Why NOT Texas?” 1000% Committed
There you have it, folks. Why NOT Texas?
